Today is my Mom's birthday. I think she said she was 29. 29 what I am not sure but I know she has the liveliness of 29.
I know today was not the easiest of birthdays for her - and in fact the last few months have been challenging but today is also Thanksgiving Sunday in Canada and I know she will say she is thankful. I know she will say she is thankful for her health and the fact that she can help others. She would say she is thankful for the fact that my sister's surgery went well and she is improving. I know she will say she is thankful for the fact that her loving husband of 50 years was able to give her a birthday kiss today. And I know she will say she is thankful for her friends and family that have helped her through things over the past few years.
I know one thing - I am thankful that she is my Mom. Thankful that she was there to teach me, even when she tried not to show it, and that she was there to sit and talk with me for days when I had my own problems to face.
I love you Mom. Thank you for being there for us. I promise we will be there for you.
Happy Birthday!

Today is my Dad's birthday. I won't divulge his age but he was almost 40 when I was born.
Eventhough the last few years have had bumps in the road I am very thankful that when I call he is there to talk to and very thankful that when we are in Newfoundland we can go out and have a beer. He has always been there to help guide us, whether through what he said (or yelled) or through what he did. I learned a lot from my dad ... things that have helped me be successful as well as things that I have passed on to my children so that they may be successful. I hope they pass those things onto their kids.
We love you Dad and we are all glad you are around to celebrate another milestone.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
This past weekend was the second of my half Marathons over the last 8 days. The Canada Army Run | The happy couple |
Yesterday was the second running of the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon and my second running of it. It was a great day for a run - in the 50s and a bit cloudy to start and then clearing off.
This is not a big race - not sure why. It is in a great running town, a few weeks before Marine Corps, so a good training race, a flat course and through the memorials and into Rock Creek park. I guess I should not complain as I do not have to dodge people but this should be an 8-10 thousand person race. Now they do also have a 5 miler that seems to have done greater attendance.
For me this is a great run. Now this year we basically did a reverse of last year, which I personally did not like as much but it is like saying I don't like milk chocolate as much as dark chocolate - it is all chocolate and yummy. Like the chocolate this was still a great run. I had lots of great people to pace against and setting the wounded warriors racing and running is fantastic.
I did end up with another PR, both for the course and for the distance, which is always a bonus - so the getting older and faster is still holding up :-). Official time 1:44:10. I cannot wait to run it again next year. But before I look to 2014 - next week it's the Canadian Army Half in Ottawa. I hope the weather is as good as it was yesterday.
Next week is the Air Force-Navy Half Marathon. The first of back to back weekend races. Next weekend's race is Saturday and then I will head to Ottawa the following weekend for the Canadian Army Half. That will be a fun weekend since Martika will also be running a race that weekend, a 5k. It will be a challenge to do back to back weekend half marathon races but I am liking forward to it and I plan to have fun.
On Friday morning I was told to have an overnight bag packed. Laura came home early and we grabbed our bags and got in the car and she said we were heading to Paris! Ok, what she really said was head towards Upperville and we ended up in Paris, Va. In Paris there is a little inn called the Ashby Inn. It is somewhere Laura and I have been reading about for a couple of years and wanted to try so she booked us a night at the Schoolhouse there and reserved a table at their famous restaurant. It was good fortune to that she did it for this birthday as their chef, who has really revived the restaurant, is leaving shortly. We had a great meal, nice cocktails, good food and good wine, on the outdoor patio overlooking the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains.
The next morning, a nice sleep and a great breakfast at the restaurant. Everything was great.Today Kristen had her formal naturalization ceremony. She, along with 48 others, officially became US Citizens. It is always interesting to attend these ceremonies. Along with the Canadian Kris there were people from Afghanistan, Albania, Burma, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Germany, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua. Nigeria, Pakistan. Russia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Thailand, Turkey, The United Kingdom, Vietnam and Yemen.
It was great to see all the exited people and parents.

I think Mom sent me this picture a couple of years back. I just love it. It is no wonder I still like old
up my race packet - including a nice new shirt and some SmartWool running socks. It was actually really good since with the new clearance on the Jeep street parking is more critical in Georgetown and I found some right away. Saturday was an easy day and Sunday I woke at 5:30 to make sure I was all fueled with protein and carbs - Canadian Bacon, Waffles and banana for breakfast and snacks as I headed to the race start.![]() |

When I finally hit Algonkian Park I knew the finish and a glass of beer were not far away so I kept the pace and crossed at 2:24:21. I was a little disappointed at that point as I knew it was a solid 40 minutes slower than my best half and 36 minutes slower than just two weeks ago but now that I look back at it adding 36 minutes based on the extra mileage, the heat and humidity, and the course is nothing to be disappointed about. It turns out I placed 7th in my division of 35 runners and 130th overall in a field of 773 - a good day.![]() |

Monday was a beautiful day and Laura and I spent it relaxing and walking around Ottawa. Of course we did some shopping as well but it was just great to have a sunny, warm Memorial Day with no need to hurry to do anything. This weekend is a great weekend. As a family we use this weekend to celebrate all the Moms in our lives. For us that means the kids spend Saturday celebrating Stepmom Saturday and then celebrating Mothers Day with their Mom on Sunday.
For Stepmom Saturday we grilled and then the girls took Laura to see The Great Gatsby at the Alamo. A great theatre to see that movie in.
For me Sunday means thinking about my Mom and being thankful that she is still as healthy and strong as ever and that she is still willing to talk to me after all I have put her through. The piles of pancakes and bacon she had to cook to feed me. The gallons of milk. The wondering where I was, as a small kid exploring our as a teenager out "with friends". My willingness to jump first and think later - usually as she is bandanging something up.
Thanks for tolerating me and thank you for setting an example of how to be the supportive parent. I love you.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

Added a smoker to my grill which already had a charcoal and gas side. I cannot wait to smoke a lamb leg
The next morning we headed to our meeting in the northeast part of Atlanta and grabbed breakfast at The Original Pancake House. I think everyone knows I love pancakes and this place had GREAT pancakes. I did get a bit ambitious and had their full stack - 6 large blueberry pancakes - and of course I left a few bites (literally on the plate was 4 small bites).
After our meeting I wanted to have lunch at a place I have been trying to get to for about 5 years - Gladys Knight's and Ron Winan's Chicken and Waffles. Chicken and waffles is a southern thing but done right it is great. Jeff, who I was traveling with, was up for it but wondered how hungry I was after the breakfast I had - but I am never one to disappoint when it comes to eating. We got to Gladys's place at a good time - not too busy and I ordered up their original waffles, a southern fried chicken breast and some house potatoes (shredded potatoes with peppers, onions and cajun seasoning). I can safely say I was not disappointed in having to wait 5 years to final eat there.
Sunday myself and Laura had an afternoon event, we will get to that, so I picked up Sam and Kris after my morning run (a nice 6-3/4 mile run - legs were a bit sore from the lifting the day before) and we headed out for breakfast. Silver Diner was Sam's choice and I actually loved the idea. We ended up at the Silver diner where Laura and I first had a breakfast date and I, of course, had pancakes. The girls seemed to love having breakfast and I think I will need to do that more. A quick trip to the mall as we drove Kris back to GMU and we headed home so myself and Laura could get ready to head out.
Our Sunday afternoon was to join the other barrel owners at Barrel Oak Winery for a spring tasting. We were hosted in the barrel room and they had snacks and, of course, lots of wine. The crowd was a mix of people and dogs. One couple had two beautiful Newfoundlands, another a wonderful greyhound and of course many more. We had some great wines and met some great people. Brain Roeder, the owner of the winery was there to greet us and we got to meet some of the other staff that we have only emailed with. The highlight was finding Laura's barrel with her plaque on it. She was very excited. They have not used our barrel yet so we are anxious to see what they will put in it.Yesterday was the annual Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. This was my 4th running for this race and it is one race I always enjoy running and yesterday was no different. It was a bit cold at the start although it was forecast to warm up so when I got ready to head down I threw on just some shorts and a long sleeve technical shirt to run in. I grabbed an old fleece to keep me warm at the start line which turned out to be a good idea as a bit of a breeze made it a bit cool.
I started the race in the red wave, the first wave behind the elite runners, and I managed to be in the front part of the wave so fewer people to have to run around. The start was nice and fast and I quickly got into a pace that was comfortable. I did end up having to run around a few people who did not seed themselves properly - if you are an elite runner why are you plodding along at a 11 min/mile pace before mile two? In general I was running with a great crowd, friendly, polite and keeping a great pace. When we hit mile 6 at the top of Hains Point Park we did hit a strong winds right in our faces. It made it cold and was creating some chop on the Potomac but did not show us down.
The last few hundred meters, up and over the rise by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, was great as I had left a bit in the tank so I kicked it a bit to cross the finish at the Washington Monument. I had two guys come up to me after - one saying how my kick motivated him and a second to say how he had been spotting me all through the race, due to my orange shirt, and how great a race I ran. It is always nice to get some compliments on the course. Finish time was 1:17:33 - more than 10 minutes faster than my first Cherry Blossom in 2009 and another personal best for the course by 1:42. It was a great race.
The race was not the best thing about the day though. After grilling some burgers and squash for the girls for lunch the 4 of us headed to the Mason Centre forthe Arts to see the Russian National Ballet Company perform Swan Lake. Kris had wanted to see a ballet after I told her about Alice in Wonderland that Laura and I had seen at the Kennedy Center, so I got her 4 tickets to Swan Lake for her birthday.
The performance was wonderful. The company has some wonderful artists, both dancers and set designers. The lady dancing Odette impressed all of us. We all thoroughly enjoyed the performance and it made a great end to a great day.
I think Laura said it first so when I was making Kris's cake it seemed like the perfect way to decorate it :-)
I am not going to say how old she is - protect her privacy type thing - but suffice to say there is part of me that cannot believe that this is "that" birthday for her.![]() |
